My name is Graham Couzens and I have severe Social Phobia / Social Anxiety Disorder. That is my Identity. On October 22, 2005 I decided to TRY Get Over It or at least share my experiences attempting it. This is My Freedom Project. I will share my daily activities and struggles with Social Anxiety Disorder.

Living With Social Phobia

March 2, 2006-Social Phobia Fatigue: It's Depressing!

I haven't felt much like writing. As with most new projects, I was excited about starting this website and sharing my experiences with social anxiety disorder. I hoped to make posting a daily event. I just realized it had been over one month since my first/last update. Though the short month of February is deceptive.

Strangely, writing about not writing makes perfect sense when it comes to social anxiety disorder. While the "disorder" primarily affects social interaction, it also tends to be very depressing and fatiguing ( getting tired from doing a lot of nothing). I haven't heard of very many social phobia sufferers who are very productive, even in very private independent pursuits.

It's a very complex issue. Depression can both result from and further cause social phobia. A lot of life pretty much requires social interaction for success. It can be depressing to think that no matter how "good" you are, you will always be a failure due to social barriers. While at the same time depression keeps you from wanting to go in public or attempt to leave your comfort zone at all.

My social phobia fixes:

The reality is: Not feeling well is drag, regardless of what disorder or disability you may have. Everything from having a cold to just being tired will magnify your problems. it is a cycle of despair that repeats.

Living with social anxiety disorder and functioning well requires good general health. I always feel better when I get a consistent amount and quality of sleep. Eating well is important also. I try to eat a lot of different colored and textured fruits and vegetable. Periods of intense exercise are also helpful.

In summary: I feel my worst socially when I am staying up late eating Burger King and not getting exercise. I feel much better, though still have moderate to severe social phobia, when I eat well, exercise, and get some sleep.
