October 20, 2006-Going to School
Despite struggles with social anxiety, I have never stopped trying to complete a
degree. At this point I have an Associate of Arts in General Studies. It
does nothing for me. Well, I don't really feel like leaving the house. So
maybe it would- if I did. I doubt it.
I decided I had to go back to school and at least get a "4 year" degree. I
am enrolled in a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Business Administration
program. It takes most of my time and has been difficult. The material is
not very difficult. However, getting any motivation from my situation is
frustrating. It is very possible that I could complete my studies and
still have no viable employment options. I browse Careerbuilder and Monster ads
regularly. Almost every description includes something like "must be very
outgoing" or "people person." You know what I mean. I also see a lot of jobs
that pay NOTHING ( to me $11-12/hr or $25-35K for having a degree and years of
experience is nothing) but require extreme extroversion, advanced degrees, 3-5+
years of SPECIFIC experience, etc. I would rather do something "low skill"
that is repetitive and requires little or no interaction. Unless there is
some economic incentive, there is little motivation to deal with the extreme
discomfort of social interaction.
I will "say" more about school later. I plan to write several times about
this issue and maybe make a section of this site specifically about completing
school ( and work, of course) with severe social anxiety.
